In recent years, the legal risks surrounding restaurant operations in New York—including labor and employment issues, workplace harassment, wages and overtime, contracts, and commercial leases—have become increasingly complex.
The Japanese Food and Hospitality Association of New York (JFHANY) is pleased to present “Real Lawsuit Cases Every Restaurant Owner Should Know,” a legal seminar designed for Japanese restaurant owners.
The seminar will feature attorney Shimpei Kawasaki, who has extensive experience handling restaurant-related legal matters throughout the New York metropolitan area. Drawing on actual lawsuit cases, he will provide a clear and practical explanation of the legal risks restaurant owners should understand, as well as preventive measures they can take.
This seminar will offer practical knowledge on legal challenges that any restaurant owner may encounter, including employment-related issues and contractual disputes.
Participants may submit questions regarding legal matters related to restaurant management when registering for the seminar. Submitted questions may be used as a reference in developing the presentation and, where possible, may be discussed during the seminar as general examples.

Shimpei Kawasaki, Esq.
Founder of Kawasaki Law Office PLLC and Of Counsel at Smith, Gambrell & Russell, LLP.
Mr. Kawasaki has extensive experience in the hospitality industry and serves as legal counsel to numerous hospitality businesses, including restaurants, primarily in New York City.
After earning his Juris Doctor (J.D.) from Florida Coastal School of Law, Mr. Kawasaki worked at a major New York law firm, where he handled antitrust litigation involving Japanese companies. He later developed his practice as a business attorney at a leading New York City law firm specializing in the hospitality industry.
In 2019, he founded Kawasaki Law Office PLLC, and in 2020, he joined Smith, Gambrell & Russell, LLP as Of Counsel.
Mr. Kawasaki advises clients across a broad range of legal matters, including contract negotiations, mergers and acquisitions (M&A), employment disputes, liquor license applications, commercial real estate transactions, and general corporate matters. His corporate practice includes guidance on shareholder meetings, corporate governance, commercial transactions, master agreements, dispute prevention, and crisis management.
He has been selected to Super Lawyers every year since 2019.
